Silent Hill 1 Themes
Primary Themes:
Parenting is really the number one theme of the video game Silent Hill. Harry Mason is contrasted against Dahlia Gillespie in terms of his motivations as a parent. Dahlia aims to improve her own life at cost to her child, whereas Harry will risk his life to save his daughter.
Another primary theme of Silent Hill is that of the fairy tale and the knight. Harry Mason serves as a knight similiar to that of a fairy tale, with his daughter serving as the princess that needs to be saved.
A third primary scene, that overlaps a little with the second, is that of a twisted childhood. This theme is present through the monsters being related to childhood, as well as the areas basically being associated with childhood such as the school.

There are a few subthemes of Silent Hill 1, which while not the main themes of the game are still relevent to the game. The first of these is the portrayal of institutions as having an evil element to them. Almost all the areas of the game are institutional, such as the school and hospital.
The last secondary theme is related to the sound and music, which is in essence the sounds of childhood distorted and corrupted. The mumbler monster sound effect is in actuality the sound of children laughing played backwards, and many of the musical themes have toy-like sounds associated with them.

Silent Hill Claw Finger Analysis

General:
The Claw Finger is a relatively common monster in Silent Hill 1, appearing first in the Elementary School. They attack by grabbing harry and stabbing into him with their sharp claws. They are slow, but can take quite a few hits and are relatively strong. In the PAL version, they are in the place of the Mumbler.
Significance:
The Claw Finger derives its appearance from small demons in fairy tales. Alessa perceived the children bullying her at school as demonic, and hence they represent the children at school. The sound they make when they notice Harry is the sound of a child laughing backwards.

Silent Hill 2 Nurse Analysis

General:
First encountered in the Brookhaven hospital, the Bubble Head Nurse attacks with melee weapons and moves fairly quickly. They are one of the tougher enemies of the game.
Significance:
The nurse relates to a number of James' feelings regards women and the death of his wife. The first symbolism is related to his frustrated libido when his wife was dying. The second symbolism is anger towards the hospital system for letting his wife die, hence the nurse's are bubble heads who are not facing the right direction.

Silent Hill 2 Mannequin Analysis

The Mannequin is a monster that is first encountered in the apartments, near the beginning of the game. They are relatively weak, attacking with the top pair of legs.
Significance:
The Mannnequin is the result of James Sunderland's innate urges towards women and feminine figures. They are assaulted by Pyramid Head (James' Shadow Archetype) as a representation of his urges as well as to remind him of his own oppressive tendencies.

Silent Hill 3 Glutton Analysis

General:
The Glutton appears in the Otherworld construction site, blocking the exit on the first floor. It is referred to in a fairy tale in which a similiar creature eats a princess who attempts to peacefully stop it from killing. It is defeated by the princess, and subsequently heather, citing the words, "Tu Fui, Ego Eris".
Significance:
The Glutton represents the child that is in Heather's womb, with the cylinder around it representing the womb and the construction site representing Heather's body. It blocks the exit in the same manner as a baby blocks the birth canal during birth.

Silent Hill 3 Leonard Analysis

Leonard appears in the area opened up by a ritual within the otherworld hospital. He swims about in murkey water and stands to attack Heather. As a boss, he is notable for his vitality and ability to take damage.
Significance:
Leonard is the abusive and realigiously orthodox father of Claudia. As a result of Heather's knowledge of him as well as Hatred for Claudia, Leonard appears as a monster with bladed hands to signify he cannot touch something without hurting it.
